The Happiness Project
The Happiness Project” focuses on female students in grades 5 and 6, exploring personal narratives through Art. Artistic journaling was used to guide students in the exploration of self-identity, challenging their own personal narrative and discovering ways to live with personal peace, joy, and strength.

The project was born from an understanding that this is a critical age for girls who begin to construct their identity. The project explores artistic styles and use artistic activities to guide students in their own self-reflections, self-identity and self-expression.

These girls also had the opportunity to “pay it forward” by being mentors to a similar group of grade 3-4 girls in their school.

Shay - What The Happiness Project means to me:
"I got to know the other girls. I can trust them. I can do art to express myself and people don’t judge me."

Bianca - What The Happiness Project meant to me:
"To me it meant that no matter what, everyone accepts me for who I am.  It was like I could be who ever I wanted to be and no one cared."

Shay - What I have learned about myself:
"Music helps me to calm down and it helps me out of my anger. The other girls can help me and I can help them. I have also noticed that I am not as rude to my friends and family."

Hailey - How has The Happiness Project helped me:
"To me, The Project has helped me to understand my feelings.  I have tried new and happy things.  I also feel comfortable and safe talking about things and so do the others. I have learned that I can show what I learn and what I am thinking.  I think others have found/learned the same thing.

I’ve also noticed that everybody feels safe and happy. I know that everybody is unique. We all like different things. We are all safe, comfortable and happy. The is not “2 of you”, it’s just you! Be creative, happy and comfortable; don’t ever be sad or disappointed."

Bianca - What I have learned about myself (and others):
"I have learned that we are all the same in so many ways, and yet different in other ways."

Miriam - What has The Happiness Project meant to me:
The Happiness Project has meant a lot to me. It taught me to be happier and kinder. I have learned that no matter what, you should be who ever you want – no matter what anyone tells you. I have learned to be happier by expressing my feelings to others, and talking about how I feel about the situation.
