The Josiah Henson Project

When I first became aware of Josiah Henson’s story, I saw myself in him. Like him I wanted to be the best at everything that I did. Like him I was arrogant and prideful. Like him I was strong, powerful and athletic. Like him I tried to earn “a kind word or a benevolent deed” for my efforts. Like him I found solace in God. And like him I had been grievously betrayed.

Throughout my life the role models who affected me the most where those who looked like me. I found that I needed to see myself reflected. When I first began tap dancing it was because I was emulating Arthur Duncan from The Lawrence Welk Show. When I became a high school hurdles champion it was because I was “being” the Olympic champion Renaldo Nehemiah. When I went to college to become a professional dancer it was because I was entranced by Gene Anthony Ray from the movie ‘Fame.’ When I began thinking seriously about acting I watched iconic actors like Denzel Washington and Sidney Poitier. It seemed as though my role models were all American. Weren’t there any Black Canadian heroes? I needed to see someone Canadian who looked like me.

Race was an integral part of Josiah’s everyday awareness. Not so for me. It wasn’t until I arrived in Canada that I was made aware of my blackness. I was introduced to the ‘N’ word as soon as I entered the Canadian school system at seven years of age. Josiah lived with that degradation from his birth. That was a way of life for him. I couldn’t understand why anyone would fling such a hurtful word at me (it literally stings) and I really couldn’t understand how he endured the constant burden of that pervasive hatred and managed to rise above it. After many encounters with racism I became bitter and resentful.

Where he chose not to escape in Ohio, I would have. Where he chose not to commit murder to avoid being sold in New Orleans, I dare say that I very likely would have. What I saw was a man who was very similar yet very different. And that’s when I knew that I had to know more about him, to become like him. What kind of man makes those kinds of choices? What values and principles guided him? Who else would benefit from the lessons of his story? Who was this man?

Through our production of Josiah Henson: From Slave to Saviour, our goal is to educate, to entertain and to inspire.
The Community Foundation for Kingston & Area is an important funding partner of the Foundation, and we greatly appreciate the many contributions invested in LLF projects.
Lake Effects Robotics will be introducing the FIRST LEGO League to elementary students this fall thanks in part to a CFKA grant totalling $14, 870.

The objective of project S.T.O.R.M. (Science and Technology Opportunities in Robotics Mentoring) is to create robotics teams with select grade 7-8 classes at schools in the Limestone District School Board.

Each week students will receive a lesson based around building their skills and knowledge to be able to successfully design, build, and program to solve various challenges using VEX IQ and Lego Mechanics systems. The aim is to have a group from each school competing at the Limestone Skills Competition in Spring 2020.

This mentorship program incorporates elements of the arts, literacy, numeracy, and technology. Students develop critical thinking and team-building skills, basic applications in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and even presentation skills. Teams research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc. and then are challenged to develop a solution.

This fall, Lake Effect Robotics will be establishing schools teams at Molly Brant Elementary School, J.G. Simoce Public School, and Module Vanier, along with their ongoing mentorship program with students attending Calvin Park Public School.

Team 2708 Lake Effect Robotics is a member of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an international organization founded to inspire young people to pursue a field in engineering. The Foundation is extremely proud of the accomplishments of these dedicated students and community members, many of whom were once students of this team.

École Polson Park P.S. - Incubator Inquiries is a hands-on learning series that introduces our natural world to Kindergarten students. Students are completely responsible for monitoring the incubator and eggs – building a home, providing water and food to the chickens, ducks or quail, and readying them to return to the farm to live. A number of community experts will also visit the students to share their knowledge about animals and proper care of them.

Students will document this learning journey using a variety of communication tools, and post to social media feeds.

A small grant of $490 is all that is required to construct and maintain the incubator.

École Polson Park P.S. - Students will be trekking to many outdoor sites using Kingston Transit to engage in a variety of activities, including pond study, tree and plant identification, watershed management, and visual arts, to name a few. This LLF grant of $1,542 will provide travelling resource kits for student investigation.
