As the only child of a Lithuanian Jewish family, Holocaust survivor and author, Elly Gotz, 93, opened both his heart and mind, allowing us a glimpse into the unimaginable. As a young man, he suffered horrendous hardships in the Kaunas ghetto and notorious German concentration camp, Dachau. Told in detail, his story of fear, hunger, torture, loss, hate, and finally liberation, kept this audience on the edge.

But it was Mr. Gotz own hard-won process of letting go of a desire for retribution and the overwhelming power of hate, that brought it home for those taking the virtual journey with him. “Anyone who listens to a witness becomes a witness,” Elly says, “We are all witness to the awful power of racism and prejudice, today. Ninety-five classrooms from 10 secondary schools in our Kingston region participated in a virtual event on April 21, 2021. This session was moderated by teacher Katherine Graham-Burra and Kingston Secondary School Grade 12 student Juliana Springer. The presentation was coordinated with Leslie Myles, LLF Managing Director, Suchetan James, LDSB Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism Consultant, and parent/lawyer Melissa Greenberg.

Response to the presentation has been overwhelmingly positive and students and staff who attended indicate the overarching message of countering hate, racial prejudice and antisemitism were profound. Supported by funding from the Foundation, this session is another way in which Limestone is working to bring antiracism teaching and learning to every student.

“The life story of Elly Gotz exemplifies the true meaning of grace on earth. How I marvel at the number of rarified individuals who can endure the very worst that humankind has to offer and can still find joy, compassion, meaning, and a deep-seated belief that no matter the sheer level of pain which spills out from the hand of evil, there is still light on the other side.” - Mrs. Barbara Hammond, LDSB educator, retired.

"Elly’s resilience and strength and the power of his love and gratitude is almost too much. To think that he came so close to such an early death (at his mother's own hands!). To think of what the world might have lost in him - and did, with six million others --it shatters the mind and soul.” – Mr. David Hannah, LDSB educator

“It was amazing to get to hear first-hand from someone who has been through so much and how he is helping others and sending out such a strong message…I learned so much and what he said about not holding onto hate forever was so beautiful…it’s so crazy to me that someone who went through so much pain and trauma is so caring and thoughtful.” – Neila, Grade 9, LCVI

Copies of Elly Gotz’s recent book, Flights of Spirit, are available online.

Recent data from the United Way indicates 1800 meals a day are served across Kingston and Frontenac, Lennox and Addington. Before COVID-19, that number was 100 meals a day.

Due to COVID-19 health risks and school closures, the LLF pivoted from its typical activities supporting learning projects in schools, to providing some funding and volunteer drivers to The Food Sharing Project through the spring and summer months.

"Although the LLF suspended its grants and events, the health and wellness of students remains a priority," notes Adam Young, Chair of the LLF. As COVID-19 continues to impact the food delivery model of the Food Sharing Project, the Foundation saw there was an immediate role it could play to help keep students fed and learning. “Supporting this essential service fits into the LLF mandate and the Board is honoured to contribute,” adds Young.

As the organization which provides nutritious food to students in schools the Food Sharing Project realized, as soon as schools closed in March, that they had to find a way to get the food students depended on at school, to them at home. Brenda Moore, Chair of The Food Sharing Project affirms, “Through the generous support of the Limestone Learning Foundation the Food Sharing Project will now be able to provide food stability for students and their families during these unpredictable times.”

The FSP provides over 6000 meals every week to students in their schools and those learning from home. In addition, the FSP currently supports over 200 families with a bi-weekly food box, which provides breakfast and lunch items, to supplement the single-serve nutrition food that is available at school. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the FPS is limited to what it can offer students at schools. The addition of FSP’s home food box will help families bridge the gap in their budgets to provide much needed nourishment for the many students who typically eat breakfast and lunch at school.

Many of the 22,000 students attending LDSB schools and alternative education sites rely heavily on School Nutrition Programs. School data indicates 50% of all students access this program at one time or another – some occasionally, some daily.

It is one that will allow the Foundation to support excellence in education through innovative methods. Adding "Health and Wellness" to the Areas of Impact - Literacy & Numeracy, Science & the Environment, Technology Visual Arts & Music, strengthens the three pillars of Mentorship, Sustainability and Pay it Forward for which the LLF is well known.

The LLF vision is to inspire excellence in education by supporting school and classroom initiatives, not funded by the Provincial government - those that demonstrate creativity, innovation, empowerment, equity and inclusion. With this amendment, the Foundation expands its ability to offer an even wider expanse of needs - needs that are, as a result of the unforeseen circumstances of the COVID - 19 pandemic changes, "essential" to the well - being and health of LDSB students. At this time, the LLF is proud to align itself with the Food Sharing Project.

The Food Sharing Project is a registered non - profit charity that has been providing healthy food to schools for almost 40 years. One of the most important elements of this project is collecting the voices of alumni and former staff. Many of these stories are already being captured on the KCVI/QECVI Legacy website.

The depth and breadth of the KCVI/QECVI collection is significant and includes both physical objects and historical documents. The project will categorize, assess the condition of, catalogue and digitize items.

The physical exhibit will have a technological component using QR codes to connect to the digital exhibit and virtual reality, similar in design to exhibits at the City of Kingston’s Artillery Park and Rideau Heights Community Centre and Library.

Students play an integral part in this project, involved in the digitization of items, interviewing alumni and staff, as well as researching the collection. These opportunities will deepen and augment the entire school community of its rich educational history. Student engagement in local and social history and their school’s role in it will be fostered. Students will develop a deeper connection to their school and to Kingston.

The artifact and document inventory has begun. The installation of the exhibit and official opening is targeted for Fall 2020.

The Limestone Learning Foundation acknowledges the generous support of the Kingston Association of Museums, Art Galleries and Historic Sites and the City of Kingston for their grant award of $10,008.52 from the City of Kingston Hertiage Fund.

Other contributing partners include the Limestone District School Board and KCVI Bicentennial Fund.
