Lots of ingredients made the LLF's Sandra Davison 2021 Memorial Golf Classic at Loyalist Golf Club, an immense success, but the weather wasn't one of them. Or, maybe it was! Persistent rain and chilling winds just couldn't dampen enthusiastic tournament sponsors, golfers and volunteers, whose efforts raised a remarkable $55.000!
One unique ingredient deserves special mention. Two talented LDSB students helped out on a “Swing Away Hole” by hitting each golfer's’ tee shot, for a donation. It led to spirited competition, lots of laughs and fascinating conversations. “It was really fun.” said Evan Gaffney, a Grade 8 student at Southview Elementary. He’s been playing golf for 3 years and has a handicap of 4. “I met so many new people, all of whom were really nice and some who knew my parents”, he said. Evan offered golfers a brief introduction to himself before teeing shot, explaining what school subjects he likes most, why he enjoys golf so much and even asked if any of the golfers had part-time jobs available—- some actually did and spoke to him after the game. Carter Hartwick, a Grade 9 student at NDSS, with a handicap is 6, also hit the golfers’ first tee shot, saying it was “really cool”. Both boys signed up for the Golf Classic next year! The student “Swing Away Hole” emphasized an LLF focus on student experiential learning.
LLF’s Board of Directors would like to thank donors, sponsors and volunteers who together made the 2021 Golf Classic a highly successful event. See you on the course on a sunny day next year!
